TPA (Third Party Administration), is an IRDAI approved independent organization that insurance companies hire to handle hospital network administration, process claims, and manage customer support. For example, when someone is buying a health policy, they may come across this term TPA.

It plays an important role in serving policyholders, accessing their health insurance services and process claim documents.

What is the Full Form of TPA in Health Insurance?

TPA stands for Third-Party Administrator. A TPA is a company appointed by an insurance company to provide services related to health and assist with the claim process. In simple words, a TPA acts as a link between the policyholder, hospital and insurance company during the claim process.

What are the Benefits of TPA?

A TPA can make the insurance claim process easier by providing a dedicated POC for claim related or any services.

  • Easier Claim Coordination

TPA coordinates with the hospital and an insurer to reduce the need of policyholders to communicate separately with multiple parties.

  • Claim Assistance

TPA can be contacted by the policyholders to collect the information about documentation, claim procedures and claim status.

  • Cashless Support

TPA helps in processing cashless requests at the eligible network of hospitals.

  • Hospital Network Support

TPAs may manage or help an insurer's network of hospitals by making it easier for policyholders to find and identify hospitals providing cashless service.

Role of TPA in Cashless Hospitalization

Cashless treatment is a big relief at the time of emergencies. It allows an Insured person to receive treatment at the eligible hospital without paying the entire hospital bill upfront. The process generally works like this: -

  • Choose a Network Hospital

  • Inform the TPA or Insurer ASAP

  • Submit the Pre-Authorisation Request

  • Get the Treatment done

  • Complete the Discharge Process

At the discharge check the hospital bills and documents thoroughly. Pay any due amount that’s not covered in your policy.

How Does the Reimbursement Claim Process Work?

Another way the claim process works is “Reimbursement” wherein you can get the treatment done at the non-network hospital by paying the amount or in-case when cashless treatment is not done by any chance. Following are the general steps for Reimbursement claim process:

  1. Read your health insurance policy carefully.

  2. Inform the TPA or Insurer about the hospitalization within the mentioned timeframe of your policy.

  3. In such types of reimbursement claims, you usually pay the eligible hospital expenses by yourself and later submit the claim documents.

  4. Collect all the relevant and required documents safely which includes: Claim form

    • Discharge Summary

    • Final Hospital bill

    • All the Payment receipts

    • Doctor’s prescriptions

    • Diagnostic Reports

    • Medicine bills

    • Surgery or any further treatment records

    • Pre and post hospitalization documents (The exact requirement of documents can differ between policies)

  5. Submit the required documents to the TPA through the available claim process.

  6. Keep copies of all the original documents and bills safely.

  7. TPA will check the submitted documents and may ask for additional documents, if required. TPA will then process it further as per the policy terms.

  8. Check whether your policy has any exclusions, deductibles, co-payments, limits in the room charges or any sub-limits.

  9. If the claim meets all the policy conditions, The insurer or TPA will settle the eligible amount after applicable deductions, limits, exclusions and other conditions of the policy.

  10. Track your claim status regularly.
